Top 3 iPhone Insurance Options

The average cost of a new smartphone is expected to go above $490 per phone, beginning in 2022. Often our smartphones shatter unexpectedly, they get soaked in the rain or, a lot of the time, they get lost or stolen. This is where iPhone insurance can become extremely handy, so you don’t need to shell out another $500 to replace your iPhone.

If you are not covered and decide to go with repairing your phone, the costs of repair can be upwards of $199+ just to fix the screen. If you’re running on the latest models (iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12), it can cost far more. And if you do end up losing your phone and cannot retrieve it, you may need to pay $899 – $1,000 just to replace it!

Asurion

Types of damages that are covered

Asurion  is Verizon’s partner for smartphone insurance. Almost everything under the sun is covered and they work with Verizon to make sure everything runs smoothly for you on the backend. The 4 major coverage categories that Asurion covers include:

  1. Cracked phone screen & physical damage
  2. Mechanical failures & manufacturer defects
  3. Loss & theft protection
  4. Water damage

It is unlikely that your iPhone would get damaged in a way that is not included in the categories above. Almost all insurance options cover these umbrella categories. So if you are simply looking for peace of mind and are not so worried about the costs, you may want to consider protecting your iPhone with insurance, especially when it comes to newer models.

Ways to Get Your iPhone Repaired

There are two options for getting your phone replaced or repaired. You can either:

  1. Go into a local store or location of your choice
  2. Receive a replacement phone in as little as 24 hours

You’ve read that right. If you file your claim through Asurion, you can get a replacement phone in as little as 24 hours. Usually…

Applecare +

Applecare+ without Theft and Loss insurance

When you first purchase your new iPhone you instantly get one year of hardware repair coverage through their limited warranty. You also receive up to 90 days of complementary technical support. Please note that it is unlikely you will face hardware issues within the first year of obtaining your new iPhone unless there are manufacturer defects!

If you choose to get Applecare+ without theft and loss insurance, you receive:

  1. Up to 2 incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months
  2. Battery service coverage
  3. Technical support and service coverage

Keep in mind that if you have Applecare+, you still need to pay a deductible on the repair that is being done! This is the norm with most insurers. Service and deductibles you may expect to see include:

  • Screen Damage: $29
  • Any other deductible damage: $99
  • Theft or loss: $149

This basically means that if you damage your phone in any way other than just a shattered screen, you will likely pay a higher deductible. The good news however, is the access, speed, and quality of repairs. You can easily walk into any Apple store or set an appointment to get your device repaired. Apple has 24/7 access to experts who are willing to talk you through the issue you’re facing to figure out the best resolution.

You also have the option to mail-in your device or do what is called a “carry-in” that allows you to take your device to other Apple authorized service providers.

SquareTrade

SquareTrade was acquired by Allstate insurance a few years ago. SquareTrade changed the insurance for the smartphone industry a bit by offering both Individual plans as well as Family plans. You can insure up to 4 iPhones for you and your family if you decide to get the family plan, which is less expensive per user.

  • Single Plan: $8.99 per month
  • Family Plan: $19.99 per month

What is covered?

Similar to Asurion, SquareTrade basically covers everything under the sun for your iPhone. Main coverage categories include:

  1. Cracked screen
  2. Touchscreen failure
  3. Liquid damage
  4. speaker/audio failure
  5. Battery failure
  6. Charging port failure

The nice thing about their coverage is that they include the small annoying things that can go wrong, and often do, with your iPhone after some time. You would be surprised how much it costs to fix a speaker/audio failure or trying to get your charging port to work. If you walk into an Apple store and request they fix it, without insurance, they will charge you hundreds of dollars!

Another beneficial aspect of SquareTrade is their options for getting your device repaired. If you are a busy professional or at home taking care of your kids, or constantly traveling, this insurer might be your best option.

They allow you to:

  1. Get an in-home repair
    1. A certified technician meets you at your home or office
  2. Local repair
  3. Genius bar
    1. You can get your device repaired at an Apple genius bar and get reimbursed
  4. Mail-in repair
    1. Guarantee you will get your phone fixed and sent back within 2 days

SquareTrade is also known to have seamless customer service. If that is something you value highly, it’s another huge selling point for SquareTrade.
